Shopdetroit

This one is more a smorgasbord of recent happenings around the city.
Smorgasbord \ˈsmȯr-gəs-ˌbȯrd\ (N): a large mixture of many different things.

• On Snow Days in the 313: Boy is it great to have a roommate who enjoys hosting friends as much as I do! Our Detroit apartment was full of good friends during the first snow day a few weeks ago. We watched the snow cover our cars as we sipped tea, played cards, and baked goodies from scratch. And as we continue to decorate our space, we excitedly imagine the kinds of awesome people that will grace our space this year. Oh, the conversations we will have the games we will play, the movies we’ll watch! The first snow day was a friendly teaser for the year to come.

• On Thanksgiving: I took a minute to reflect on the heartbreaking history behind our beloved holiday, and realized that perhaps not everyone will be celebrating Thanksgiving this year. After a moment of reflection, I found comfort in knowing that Thanksgiving is also a time to be surrounded by family, and I stuffed myself with sweet yams, unforgettable mac ‘n’ cheese (always my top 2 favorites), tender turkey, and a variety of delicious pies.
Just a Thought though: Do you think Thanksgiving should be the next Columbus Day?

• Since it was my birthday weekend, I danced to the music of Tokimonsta, Slow Magic, and Giraffage at the Polulux performance space on Woodward this week.
They are all amazing performers and the energy that exuded from the stage was unforgettable.

• On Small Business Saturday: #shopdetroit was a success in my books, and the sentiment seems to be echoed amongst my colleagues as well! I had such a wonderful time supporting some of the small businesses on Saturday. One of my discoveries included a cozy little boutique on Grand River called Si-Gees Clothing. If you haven’t discovered the magic of boutiques yet, this is your chance! And if you didn’t get a chance to #shopdetroit over the weekend, join me and #shopdetroit all year long.
