There is a lot of hullabaloo, yes I said hullabaloo, about gender buzzing around these days. There are issues such as a wage gap, differences in leadership styles, the validity of traditional gender roles etc. etc. These are topics I will leave for an expert to handle, but I want to talk about my experience. Up until this fresh start in the wonderful city of Detroit, it seems like everywhere I have worked has been a boys club. My first full time job was in a flooring mill where we might have had three women in the entire plant. A majority of my work experience comes from the USAF. Although the armed forces are definitely pushing for more females it is still a male dominated world. Especially when it comes to aviation which was my specialty. Even before work I was always in sports that were divided by gender. Now however, things have completely changed. I started at Team Detroit in Recruiting, and I am the only man. The Challenge Detroit leadership is comprised of all women and we also have 1 more female fellow than male fellow. It is truly a woman’s world. All the noise about gender issues had me thinking there might be a big adjustment for me. Had my patriarchal work life left me ill prepared to work with all ladies? I can say whole heartedly that is not the case. My all female leadership at Challenge Detroit and Team Detroit, and my male and female coworkers display wonderful attitudes, work hard, and are dedicated to our shared goal of getting the job done. Those are the traits that I have found to be the real difference in the working world. If people exercise them the experience is positive, if not it can be hard getting out of bed in the morning. Two months into the job I can confidently say that the reversal in gender make up has made no difference in my work life, but the attitude, effort and commitment of my coworkers has made my exciting new start very enjoyable. So, I’ll let other people worry about minute differences because so far it’s all the same to me!
