Fomo is real, and for those who don’t know what FOMO is, it is “Fear of missing out” and I had some Major FOMO over thanksgiving, and new years. Unfortunately I am the youngest and it’s a lot easier for me to go home to New York for the holidays than everyone coming out to Detroit.
I love the family time over the holidays but it’s hard to see all of the fun things going on in Detroit over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.
Thanksgiving had holiday markets before and after thanksgiving, the parade, and of course the Lions game, which they actually won. Living in Detroit means you can wake up watch the parade, tailgate, go to the Lions game, and then hopefully enjoy Thanksgiving after the game. I had a great Thanksgiving with my family, but I hope next year I can experience a Detroit Thanksgiving.
Christmas, the FOMO was not as bad, because many of the events going on Downtown and around the city happened before I left for home. I was able to go skating in Campus Martius, be downtown for Menorah in the D, walked down a lighted Woodward ave, and go to a Red Wings game. All of them were amazing, and there were lots of people downtown and in the city, which was great to see, but it was not nearly as hectic and stressful as New York in the holidays, which I really like about Detroit.
New Years Eve, I always find to be overhyped and always an underwhelming holiday. In New York people make elaborate plans, and try to avoid Time Square like the plague (unless you’re a tourist). In Detroit, seeing photos and videos of the D drop, I wanted to be there and take the time to be a tourist in Detroit. I’ve enjoyed every other “touristy” Detroit event and hopefully next year I’ll get to cross at least one of Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years off my list next year.
