If you looked up challenge in the dictionary, you might find “a call to take part in a contest or competition, especially a duel” or “an objection or query as to the truth of something, often with an implicit demand for proof”.

In Challenge Detroit terms, each challenge is a 5-week project with a Detroit non-profit. There is no dueling or competition, but we (the fellows) are split up into teams so we can accomplish different tasks for the non-profit based on our skills or interests. We are taking part in Detroit’s revitalization, and are pushed to think of new and innovative ideas and work alongside others who challenge negative perceptions of Detroit and work to build a better future for its residents.

Our first challenge was with MACC Development, which is “seeking the holistic revitalization of Detroit’s 48214 community, block by block, neighbor by neighbor.” This challenge was particularly significant for me because I am part of the 48214 community. I met neighbors, explored businesses, and learned about the history of my neighborhood.

I was part of the volunteer recruitment strategy team and we were tasked to figure out “How might we identify volunteers and create unique ways to engage them in [MACC Development’s] sports and tutoring programs outside of our current network?” MACC Development hopes to expand MACC Sports to accommodate more children, and double the size of their literacy program in the next year, so finding volunteers to sustain their growth is incredibly important.

Interview with Ezekiel Harris, Executive Director of MACC Development

First, we researched. We conducted interviews, phone calls, and surveys with MACC Development staff, volunteers and parents. We gathered best practices from other Detroit organizations that recruit large amounts of volunteers. Our various research methods helped us develop 3 key findings.

1. Mission and community impact are the main reasons for volunteering

2. Support and structure is needed for volunteer staff

3. Big challenges related to travel and timing

Brainstorming session (ideation) to create groups of similar ideas

Based on our findings, we were able to make recommendations to Ezekiel Harris and the rest of the staff at MACC Development. When recruiting new volunteers, target specific groups for MACC Lit and MACC Sports who are interested and available within program hours. College students studying to become teachers would be the perfect volunteers, as would collegiate or recreational athletes. To make the volunteer process as simple as possible, create clear steps for getting involved and staying involved. Hiring a volunteer coordinator will make communication much easier since it will go through one person. Lastly, we recommended that MACC Development improve volunteer resources and created a handbook and toolkit for staff to use and modify.

Hopefully our insights and information were helpful to MACC Development, and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future and staying involved!
