I became a volunteer usher at the Fox Theater to be more intentional about how I spend my time. Although I have always loved to attend live shows, it requires money, time, and planning. When I moved to Detroit this summer, I took to opportunity to create new priorities and goals for the year – one of my goals is to be involved, aware, and appreciative of the arts. Through ushering at the Fox, I consistently attend live performances, connect with a larger community, and further recognize the significance of this space.

The Fox Theater first opened in 1928 as part of one of William Fox’s grand movie theaters. There are 5,000 seats total. As an usher, and a part of team 12, I am at two shows a month. It’s been nice to connect with the other ushers, many of whom have been volunteering for at least a decade, to hear about their perception of and experiences with the Fox and the city. The doors open around 45 minutes prior to the show time. After escorting people to their seats, we can claim an empty seat or watch from the side aisles.

My Schedule at the Fox

So far, I have ushered shows for Paramore, Brand New, The Grinch, and Cirque Dreams Holidaze. I’ve also attended Neil Berg’s Broadway Holiday show. Coming up, I’ll be ushering for Elf and Sesame Street Live. Ushering has been a wonderful way to stay connected and appreciative of the Fox Theater and its incredible offerings.

When is your next show at the Fox Theater?
