I’ve lived in other major cities, including Chicago and London, and although the cost of living here in Detroit is much less than other major cities, going out can still add up. As summer rolls around and the weather is getting warmer I’m on the lookout for things to do that won’t break the bank because I live on a Fellow salary. If you’re like me you spent the winter hibernating, drinking summer beer and pretending you live on a beach. If that hits the mark, then this list is for you. So, let’s get out and explore Detroit (for free)!

Eastern Market

The market is one of the oldest in the United States. The architectural character of the area varies, but many of the old warehouse buildings are still standing and being reactivated as small businesses pop up. The market is free to peruse but you may want to bring some cash to purchase fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and various other sundries. The main market day is Saturday, and if you’re on a budget go later in the afternoon when vendors are looking to make some deals.

Guarding Building and Fisher Building

These buildings are iconic in the Detroit skyline. If you’re in the mood to explore some historic architecture then join one of the free tours run by Pure Detroit. There are multiple tours offered each weekend. I have yet to take an official tour but have been in the lobbies of both buildings and they are stunning.

Detroit Riverwalk

The Riverwalk is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. There are chairs and benches to sit and enjoy the view. If you’re looking to entertain kids, there is a carousel and a fountain. The Riverwalk currently is open from the Joe Louis arena to Mt. Elliott Park, with expansions coming to connect to the MacArthur Bridge and Belle Isle.

Belle Isle

One of the best things about warmer weather is spending time on Belle Isle. If you’re driving, you’ll need a State Park Pass, which costs $11, but you can bike or walk across the bridge for free. The attractions on Belle Isle include a beach, conservatory, aquarium, museum and nature center, all of which are free to the public.  The views of Detroit and Windsor can’t be beaten from Sunset Point on the western point of the island.

Detroit Experience Factory

If you’re interested in exploring Detroit and learning more about its rich architecture and history, then consider joining a free tour by DXF. Walking tours are offered in downtown, Eastern Market, and many of Detroit’s neighborhoods. DXF also offers a number of bus tours, but costs for these tours can vary. Tours are meant for locals and visitors alike, so please consider checking one out!
