For this time around, I want to recount and offer my thoughts on all the live shows that I have attended since moving to Detroit. Hopefully, it may convince you to attend one too!
- Explosions in the Sky
- For those of you unfamiliar (most) this Explosions in the Sky is an electronic alternative instrumental-only band that produces huge atmospheric sounds in compositions that you almost certainly aren’t ready for. This concert was a last minute decision, and not one I will soon forget. Venue was not ideal, as the Masonic Temple upstairs is pretty hard to maneuver. Overall: 7.3/10
- Crystal Castles
- If you don’t listen to Crystal Castles yet, you need to. If Alice Glass/Robert Smith would’ve been there, it would’ve boosted this show to a solid A+. Overall: 8.9/10
- Die Antwoord
- Another last minute decision, Die Antwoord was another GREAT show, they really know how to play the crowd, and it was a true performance. For those who are unfamiliar, Die Antwoord is a South African alternative hip-hop group who has a few songs produced by Diplo. Overall: 7/10
- Haute to Death
- This one is a nod to my favorite place in Detroit to go out – Temple Bar – basically if Haute to Death is DJ’ing Temple Bar isn’t an option, it’s the only option. Overall: 9/10
- Danny Brown
- While I’m a big fan, the Detroit native didn’t show up for his hometown the way I would’ve hoped. Would I go again? Yes. But I would certainly be doing my homework first. Overall: 6.5/10
Whether you know the artist or not, “It’s like pizza, baby. It’s good no matter what, there’s music in the air”.
