Tell us about one of your favorite neighborhoods in Detroit and what makes it unique?

My favorite neighborhood in Detroit is Livernois Ave, also known as The Avenue of Fashion. It was a thriving neighborhood in the African-American community and remains the home to many local restaurants and businesses today. I enjoy patronizing the different eateries and shops there. My favorite thing about Livernois is the beauty. I love the vibrant art displays on the buildings and trees.

Tell us about the challenge project you’re currently working on, what are you learning from the experience?

We are currently partnering with Slow Roll to help them identify key nonprofits to work with and enhance community engagement among riders. My team specifically is tasked with developing a Buddy Program that will bring bike riders together and mobilize on their shared interests regarding service. I’ve learned many riders are excited to be apart of a movement that pushes the city forward and encourages healthy, physical activity

Tell us about your host company and your role in the organization.

I work for Equity Education, a nonprofit that runs four charter schools in the city. As the Service & Community Engagement Coordinator, I am responsible for creating programming for middle and high school youth. This includes introducing students to new places and resources within the city. I am also responsible for the blog and facilitating community discussion and activities.

What kind of impact do you hope to have with your host company and within the city?

I hope to empower young minds to believe in themselves and instill the value of service. I want to help level the playing field for all students navigating the educational system. I also hope to support local residents in reclaiming the narrative around new development. I want to work with organizations dedicated to equity and inclusion, as well as create spaces for community growth and healing.

What are you most looking forward to in Detroit in 2018

I’m most looking forward to exploring the city and continuing my journey of wellness. I plan to visit Belle Isle in the spring to enjoy the scenic views and peaceful atmosphere. I also look forward to frequenting Eastern Market for fresh fruits and vegetables and getting lost in John King’s Book Store – one of the largest collections in the world.

How do you believe your fellowship will shape your career moving forward?

Challenge Detroit has provided me the platform to speak truth to power, and interface with many organizations in the city. I am confident my experience with these organizations will help me become a more well-rounded individual, both on and off paper. I am grateful for the people I’ve met and things I continue to learn from them. These lessons will continue to propel forward and lay the foundation for any future endeavors in the nonprofit world.
