These are a few of the ways Detroit has shaped my career in architecture.

Detroiter’s help each other

Before moving to Detroit, I thought networking was cheap wine and superficial conversation. In this city, progress is made in face to face connection. You have to be present in order to find people to work with. I’ve learned to become more comfortable talking about myself.

the side hustle

Everyone you meet has a passion project. I have found an opportunity to operate outside of the our profession, develop niche interests and dig in.

be genuine and fearless

Part of being genuine is becoming vulnerable. Sometimes, saying the wrong thing and being corrected is the only way to grow. Being fearless in difficult conversations moves us forward.

we shape the narrative of our city

Designers have the power to create visions for positive change. We tell the story of our city daily through what we design. what we say, and where we work and live.

empathy and equity

Architects aren’t here to discover and solve Detroit’s problems. We must listen to community needs and find ways to design together with stakeholders.
