{"id":17337,"date":"2016-09-30T02:21:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T02:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/?p=17337"},"modified":"2016-09-30T02:21:01","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T02:21:01","slug":"live-detroit-growing-brush-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/blog\/live-detroit-growing-brush-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Live Detroit: Growing with Brush Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brush_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brush Park<\/a> is one of the neighborhoods closest to Detroit\u2019s downtown revitalization boom, and it also happens to be where I live!<\/p>\n<p>When I first got to Detroit last summer, I moved into the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernard_Ginsburg_House\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Ginsburg house<\/a> in Brush Park. It is one of the few historical homes still standing in a neighborhood which was once referred to as \u201cLittle Paris.\u201d The Bernard Ginsburg house was built in 1898 by a young <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Kahn_(architect)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albert Kahn<\/a> who eventually came to be called the \u201cArchitect of Detroit.\u201d Kahn went on to design the <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/4\/46\/Fisher_Building_Detroit_crop.jpg\/250px-Fisher_Building_Detroit_crop.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fisher Building<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/1a\/General_Motors_building_089833pv.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cadillac Place<\/a> building downtown, the <a href=\"http:\/\/tanglewoodconservatories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Conservatory_Top1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belle Isle Conservatory<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/abandonedonline.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/plant-overview1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Packard Automotive Plant<\/a>. Donavan, the current home owner and my roommate, is only the 4th owner of the home. When I moved in I just thought he did a fantastic job renovating the 3rd floor roof deck! Unfortunately that is why I am an engineer and not a historian. (City Modern renderings)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dan Gilbert&#8217;s\u00a0plans for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citymoderndetroit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Modern<\/a>\u00a0have stirred up some controversy among Brush Park residents, especially members of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brushparkcdc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Brush Park CDC<\/a>, who had hoped for renderings more in line with the neighborhood\u2019s still present, and strong historical architecture. Personally I had hoped there would be more parks and public green spaces included in the future plans for Brush Park.
