Whether it be a live band at brunch, the bustling happy hour crowd, or the bonfires at night, there’s always something to enjoy at this spot.

Eastern Market Saturdays: I’m hoping if you’re reading this you have already been, go again. I can guarantee you missed something. Aside from the obvious cornucopia of fresh produce, meats, and merchandise there’s some amazing restaurants like Stache International, La Rondinella, and Roma Café. For cocktails there’s the legendary Vivio’s with a multitude of takes on the bloody mary, Detroit City Distillery with its award winning spirits and nationally renowned cocktails, and Thomas McGees where soccer hooligans and whiskey connoisseurs make for an always entertaining crowd.

Old Miami (backyard): an urban utopia of sorts, the backyard of the Old Miami on Cass in Midtown is essentially whatever you decide to make of it. A veritable free for all where patrons are encouraged to lounge on the grass, move the furniture, assemble their own bonfire, and in some cases bring their own instruments. The inside portion of the bar exists year round, but it’s the expansive backyard that truly makes this place magical in the warmer months.

Kayaking the Waterways: Outdoor adventure is everywhere in Detroit so it should come as no surprise that there are several places where you can rent a water vessel and explore the expanse of the city. My choice would be the rental spot on Belle Isle where you can then head down the river to secret canals of south east Detroit.

“Only in Detroit” Events: Finally a 3 for 1 of seasonal events that are uniquely Detroit. Cheyne Park amphitheater along the east riverfront comes alive in the summer with acts ranging from Diana Ross and Erykah Badu to 80s rockers Ratt and Warrant. Detroit’s annual Jazz Fest takes place September 2nd through 5th of this year in Hart Plaza is pretty self-explanatory but also definitely not to be missed. Dally In the Alley takes place on September 10th this year in the heart of Midtown and attracts a dizzying array of music, art, and incredibly eccentric and entertaining individuals.

Still only the tip of the iceberg I’d strongly encourage everyone to get off the beaten path and explore everything Detroit has to offer in its warmest and most relaxing months. Now go forth and enjoy the journey.

Following up on an earlier blog in which I outlined some ideal spots to spend your Detroit summer, here’s a deeper dive into some places to enjoy the weather and shorten your bucket list: Northern Lights Patio: Located in the New Center area in the shadow of the Fisher building, this outdoor oasis takes the […]

[17,12
196,468
post-16470","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-livedetroit","category-playdetroit","tag-challengedetroit","tag-summer
["GET
