Life as a Challenge Detroit Fellow can feel like a binary existence, balancing life at our\u00a0host companies and\u00a0as fellows during Challenge Fridays. Here’s an example of a day in the life as a fellow at my host company, Mosher Dolan<\/a>, and during a Challenge Friday.<\/p>\n

At my host company:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/b>6:20 am\u00a0<\/strong>Alarm sounds\u00a0for the third time, I hear my roommate up, I can’t avoid it any longer. Make breakfast, tea, chat with my fellow fellow\/roommate about the day ahead.<\/p>\n

7:30 am <\/strong>Drive from Lafayette park to Midtown to pick up my co-worker (and year 3 Fellow) for our carpool.<\/p>\n

8:17 am <\/b>Arrive at Mosher Dolan offices in Royal Oak.<\/p>\n

10:46 am <\/strong>Wrap up a site\u00a0meeting at a Mosher Dolan Residence. My host company specializes in high-end residential construction, and I have the opportunity to visit ongoing projects during site visits to facilitate\u00a0progress.<\/p>\n

1:23 pm <\/strong>Finish typing up notes from this morning’s meeting, send to architects and interior designers.<\/p>\n

4:30 pm <\/strong>Leave work, drive back to the city. Fortunately, traffic is usually jammed in the opposite direction leaving Detroit.<\/p>\n

5:20 pm <\/strong>Arrive back home in time to cook up some dinner.<\/p>\n

6:00 pm <\/strong>Attend an event a few blocks away from my apartment,\u00a0panelists discuss the future development of the Detroit Riverfront and Eastern Market.<\/p>\n

8:12 pm <\/b>Quick check-in on our current project, prepare for Friday.<\/p>\n

10:48 pm\u00a0<\/strong>Bed<\/p>\n

During a Challenge Friday:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

6:20 am\u00a0<\/strong>I’m up early finishing any final tasks before the day begins: research, reviewing notes, printing resources.<\/p>\n

8:17 am\u00a0<\/b>Drive to TechTown to meet up with my fellow fellows, review our goals\u00a0for today, and check-in on team progress.<\/p>\n

10:46 am\u00a0<\/strong>For this particular challenge with\u00a0Detroit Public Schools,<\/a>\u00a0my team visits with Marcus Garvey Academy to understand parent engagement.<\/p>\n

1:23 pm\u00a0<\/strong>Wrap up interviews with parents, students, and administrators, and head back to TechTown to reconvene.<\/p>\n

4:30 pm\u00a0<\/strong>Reflect on the day, and check in with Team Leads regarding progress, challenges, and successes.<\/p>\n

5:20 pm\u00a0<\/strong>Head out for dinner with fellows. After a long day, it’s nice to decompress with fellow fellows.<\/p>\n
