{"id":13242,"date":"2015-10-01T03:30:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T03:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/?p=13242"},"modified":"2015-10-01T03:30:20","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T03:30:20","slug":"rediscoveringhome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/blog\/rediscoveringhome\/","title":{"rendered":"Rediscovering home."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up in Detroit I feel like I had a good pulse on the city coming into this fellowship opportunity. \u00a0I wondered to myself how the experiences I would be going through with my CD fellows (some of whom had\u00a0also grown\u00a0up in Detroit\/MetroDetroit, others new to the City entirely) would be for me.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take me long to realize that there was still lots to learn. \u00a0One of the highlights early on was a Bus Tour with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weknowdetroit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Detroit Experience Factory<\/a>. \u00a0Jeanette Pierce and her team provided\u00a0an eye opening tour through areas I\u00a0very rarely\u00a0traveled to aside from heading to a destination spot (in this\u00a0particular case Brightmoor\/Scotty Simpson&#8217;s). \u00a0Aside from just driving through \u00a0the neighborhoods and pointing out what is presently there, she gave an insightful history on the neighborhoods and some of the policies and occurrences of yesteryear that still affect things today.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago I had the opportunity to travel overseas with my family to my mother&#8217;s homeland of Lebanon. \u00a0My grandmother, who I grew up with, was with us for the\u00a0trip. \u00a0One of the things I most cherish from that experience\u00a0is spending time with a women I knew and loved all my life, and yet learning so much about her that was previously unknown by simply sitting down with her and\u00a0listening to the things she had to say.<\/p>\n<p>During the course of this yearlong\u00a0fellowship I look forward to spending time\u00a0with the city I love and have called home all my life, and\u00a0getting to know her in a way not previously known to me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13259 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/skyline-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"skyline\" width=\"669\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/skyline-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/skyline-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/skyline-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Aerial\u00a0photo via <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/3andathird\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3andathird<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up in Detroit I feel like I had a good pulse on the city coming into this fellowship opportunity. \u00a0I wondered to myself how the experiences I would be going through with my CD fellows (some of whom had\u00a0also grown\u00a0up in Detroit\/MetroDetroit, others new to the City entirely) would be for me.
