One of my favorite things about living in Detroit is the food scene. I’ve lived in Chicago and London, but never really felt like I could truly experience all the amazing food those cities had to offer.  Detroit’s food scene feels more accessible to me. I’m trying to pinpoint why that is, but it’s hard to define. It’s partly because I’ve never had a problem snagging a table when arranging last minute dinner plans, but it’s also because there are so many options that don’t blow my budget. A couple of months back, I made a list of all the restaurants in and around Detroit that I want to try, and I’m currently eating my way through that list.

Most all of the restaurants I’ve tried so far have been delicious, although some have been more amazing than others. If you’re looking for a good budget-friendly (or at least one that won’t break the bank) meal, here are my top 5 suggestions*:

Johnny Noodle King

Not your typical ramen shop. I came for lunch with a friend on a Saturday afternoon and although there were no tables when we walked in, it only took about 15 minutes to get seated. They serve a number of different noodles and broth bowls with variations that are inspired by cuisines around the world.  Highly recommend this spot for a quick and filling meal.

Sister Pie

A cute little storefront in West Village, there is a large table with community seating, as well as a couple of smaller tables and benches. While they make really, really delicious pies, there are also a number of other baked goods offered daily including hand pies, scones and cookies. You can indulge your sweet tooth or your craving for savory here. They also offer salad options if you stop in for lunch. The menu rotates daily, but I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve tried.

Mudgie’s

If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, then this is the place for you. With an extensive menu, they have an option for just about everyone. With fresh, locally sourced ingredients these sandwiches are a work of art, and definitely don’t taste anything like the sandwiches I pack in my lunch bag.

Parks and Rec Diner

Breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. Need I say more?

Batch Brewing

Come for the beer, stay for the food. Or vice versa.  This place has a chill atmosphere with long picnic style tables both inside and on the patio. If you’re looking for a place to kick back with some friends then this is the spot you’re looking for.
