Education is a team effort. For students to succeed, it will take the cooperation of all those who care about our children’s futures. Charter schools have remained the alternative in education for years. They have provided structure in times of chaos and disorganization. However, public schools remain the foundation of community stewardship.  While they come from different places, their goal should be the same – to provide quality education. Education should be grounded in collaborative solutions and unwavering empathy. These support systems propel our students into amazing careers and leadership roles. Community-led educators should be creating safe spaces for our children to grow. It is a new age and era for Detroit education. Personally, I am excited about the resurgence of Detroit public schools. Having worked in the Osborn community, I am aware of the talented students that walk those corridors as well. I admire Mr. Vitti’s unwavering passion to the neighborhoods. His strong belief in our kids are exactly what families need to regain trust in an educational system that has failed them for too long. It is now time to come together for the good or the whole. School choice should not a competition but rather a bridge. Charter schools and public schools in Detroit should work together to advocate on behalf of all youth in this city, especially those of color. There is great passion from both sides of the spectrum. Best practices should be shared so that each child can succeed, regardless of district or institution. The structural complexities of education will always be present but not impossible to navigate. The work may be vast alone, but together, we can succeed.
