This month I had the opportunity to partner with Minds Matter and Focus Hope. The reason that I reached out to Minds Matter was because this was an opportunity to bring two of my biggest passions together, the youth and my community. Minds Matter Detroit is a new organization that’s supports students with their journey to higher education. They focus on mentoring, group instruction, test prep, and college summer programs to provide students with the resources they need to gain admission and graduate from four year colleges. I worked with the students of Minds Matter to package commodity supplemental food boxes for homebound senior citizens. Through this experience I was able to mentor and gain different insights from these high school students, all while boxing lunches for senior citizens. I must say that the experience was much different from any other that I have given food. Typically I just stand and pass out lunches but this time I was literally on a fast paced assembly line making the lunches. It was very hard to keep up with the high schoolers because they were so fast and seemed to never ever get tired or miss a beat. Though, I like the interacting piece of passing out lunches I gained a new respect for the people that actually make them because it is a lot of behind the scenes work. Since this event I have reached back out to Minds Matter Detroit as I would love to continue to volunteer, tutor, and mentor. Considering they are new and looking for volunteers, I believe that this will be a great avenue to continue the connection between both of my passions. I believe that if we teach the youth the importance of not only college but also taking care of your community, this city will be a better place.
