Now this might not be the most profound or inspiring blog that I create this year, it is one that has been hitting hard for me this month.  It has been a little over two months living in Detroit and while it has been an incredible experience, it has also been tough to be so far from home.  For those who also may be far from home and want some advice on how to get through your own feeling of homesick(ness) see below.

.) Remember where you are from, while enjoying new places.  I’m lucky to have lived most my life on Lake Superior and love having this hat to always remind me where I came from but also where I’m going.

.) Go watch something new!  I’m a hockey player so I jumped at the chance to see the Redwings play for the last season at the Joe.  It helps when you have great friends to spend the game with.

.) Eat food!  While working on our challenge project, we had to do some important “research” including going to Sister Pie, Cutters and Detroit Vegan Soul.   They were all so delicious.

.) Get out of the city!  Detroit is an incredible place to live and always has exciting events to go to, but sometimes you need to get away from the hustle and bustle.  Going for a walk, gardening or visiting a pumpkin patch with friends can always help ease your mind.

.) Learn to let go of the things you can’t control!  Home is where the heart is and while sometimes we all just need a hug from our mom, life can be challenging but remember you are not alone.  Go out with friends, try new things, eat food and embrace all the great things that make Detroit home.
