In 2013, Hamtramck, Michigan made national headlines when it became the first majority-Muslim city in the United States. Surrounded by Detroit, Hamtramck is a city within a city. Historically, Hamtramck was a neighborhood of Polish immigrants who flocked to the city’s factories in the early 20th century. Compared to surrounding areas, Hamtramck has a high population density as well as a high poverty rate. Recent census data shows the foreign born population is at 44%. The countries with the highest percentage of immigrants are Bangladesh, Yemen and Bosnia. These photos were taken at a rally in which immigrant and American born members of the Hamtramck and greater Detroit community came together to support each other.
