It was announced last week that Detroit’s only Big Boy restaurant will serve patrons for the very last time on Easter Sunday. Within the next few months, Big Boy will no longer occupy the corner of East Jefferson and East Grand Boulevard. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2017/04/01/detroit-islandview-big-boy-closing/99911836/

The new owners of the property, The Platform, have temporary plans to include a farmers market and food truck court on the site once the restaurant is demolish in the next few months.

As a lifelong, east side Detroiter, it will be very strange driving down E. Jefferson and no longer seeing that signature Big Boy atop its signage. It’s been a staple of both the Islandview neighborhood, and the city of Detroit for 50 years!

Growing up, that was a spot a I definitely spent some time at. Whether it was with the family as a kid or even after my high school prom, this Big Boy was the place to be!

I understand that as time progresses some things may change and come to an end, with that being said, some things shouldn’t, and the Big Boy is one of them. A 50 year establishment that has occupied the same space since their doors open for business, there has too be an alternative plan that can be implemented.

Personally I believe Big Boy would continue to thrive. Even amidst the new development that is planned for the Islandview community. Yes, some things must come to an end, but at the same time, we should cherish those things that have been a signature piece of a community. It’s hard for any business to remain open for a handful of years, but 50, that speaks volumes.

We don’t have too many establishments of any industry hanging around that long in Detroit.
