People constantly talk Detroit as a food desert. And while some would disagree I actually agree with that statement compared to Metro Detroit or even other cities. There are no overnight grocery stores to the best of my knowledge and the closest one is in Ferndale of 8 mile. Oddly enough I actually like to do my shopping late at night to stay away from the herds of people after work and I often have to drive 20 minutes to the nearest Meijer that’s opened 24/7.

This however is not about Detroit being a food desert, there is a different type of desert in Detroit. Detroit is a fitness desert. I have traveled to the far east side, northwest, west, and greater downtown area and have yet to find a fitness center that is both reasonably priced and decent. Granted, I played collegiate sports, which means I was slightly spoiled as far as fitness centers goes. But it shouldn’t be a case of, I have to drive to Metro Detroit to enjoy working out.

Speaking of fitness in general, compared to time I’ve spent in other cities, Detroit is lacking in general. From different types of yoga, to running groups, athletic leagues and casual weight-room goers. I’ve been unable to find high achieving fitness groups. The few fitness centers around me are often over packed and there’s not enough equipment to support the amount of people.

I don’t want to just sit and complain however, even as I’m writing this blog I realized there’s a need for that in this city and I can be the one to initiate that. I don’t have the funds to start my own fitness centers, but fitness groups are just as helpful. To have someone there to encourage you and push you when your mind is telling you to quit is priceless. I hope in the upcoming years Detroit becomes more aware of fitness.
