For my team’s latest Challenge, my team is focusing on personal stories about Belle Isle, and more specifically the Conservatory. The island quite literally means “beautiful island” and has been one of the most sacred places for me at every stage of my life. From a very young age I remember spending time on the island — at the zoo, learning how to dive at the DYC, feeding the deer during the winter, long bike rides with friends, early morning sunrises, afternoons at Hipster beach, Detroit Hoops Leagues games, picnics, yoga, paddleboarding, etc. To think that we have this private oasis tucked in between two countries, is truly a privilege.

It has been an incredible experience over the past few weeks listening to the stories people have about their own experiences on Belle Isle, as well as learning some history and fun facts about the. I am a super nerd when it comes to public places and enjoying the outdoors — I truly love to see a multi-faceted outdoor space with something for everyone. Belle Isle is a beautiful piece of Detroit that anyone can enjoy — if you are into sports or cycling those options are available, history can be found by exploring the Conservatory, Aquarium, Dossin Museum, etc. There’s the opportunity to explore nature and animals at the Nature Center. Swimming and leisure time is what the now well-maintained Belle Isle Beach is for.

I am thankful for this project because it has reminded me of what a special place the island is for not only me, but for many other Detroiters. I feel as though we take advantage of such beautiful spaces. Exploring my own stories and the stories of others has been a reminder of what a treat it is this space is available to us, for recreation, time spent with family and friends, but also for solitude and time spent alone with our environment.
