While not a dish native to Detroit, chicken and waffles appear on many menus in the city and they are delicious. Prior to moving to Detroit, I’d never had chicken and waffles, but since moving here that’s all changed for the better. While I am by definition a rookie, I’m going to give you my unprofessional opinion on the best you can find in Detroit.

My first experience was definitely the best, and it wasn’t just because it was my first time – but I’ll save the best for last:

Honest Johns’ – this place is super casual, extremely reasonable prices and great for breakfast, lunch, dinner and beyond (the kitchen is open until 2am).  With a comprehensive menu of omelets and sandwiches there’s a lot to choose from, but should you find your way to some chicken and waffles you can take your pick between chicken wings or chicken nuggets atop a fluffy, diner style Belgian waffle. I went with the nuggets and would do it again – douse in some syrup and you’re good to go! These are good to get your feet wet, and I’d get them again, but they don’t mess with the best.

New Center Eatery – this is my neighborhood spot, and you can’t beat their $5 after 5pm prices. I’d heard rumblings they’re the best in town so I had to give it a shot – I got the original, although the red velvet was tempting. In my opinion if you don’t know what you’re doing and there’s and “original” on the menu, don’t over think it. Hearty, savory and delicious this place is a can’t miss. They also have deli sandwiches and a new menu in the works but you won’t find it online so you’ll just have to come in and check it out for yourself. Avoid the post-church lunch rush on Sunday and catch this place on a week night after 5 for the special. Bring cash so you don’t have to hit the ATM in the entryway, because it’s the only currency they accept

Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles – winner, winner chicken dinner – this place is fire! Open for less than a year, Kuzzo’s has quickly made a name for itself in Detroit. Owned by a former Lion’s player, and located on the Avenue of Fashion. From the friendly, family ambiance, to the chicken, waffles, koolaid and craft cocktails – Kuzzo’s can speak for itself. With a hint of cinnamon, the waffles weigh in on top and the chicken’s seasoning is unmatched. Get the What Up Doe, which they might as well call the kitchen sink: 3pc fried chicken, 2 waffles, grits & 2 eggs w/cheese – or just get as many pieces of chicken and waffles as you can stomach. This place was slammed when I went so be prepared to wait. Well worth it though – if you’re going to go anywhere – this is it.
