Homelessness is a big deal in the city of Detroit. For some reason we feel that it’s only important to help them and specifically feed them around the holidays and only if they are within a program or shelter. We cannot forget about the individuals that might not make it into a shelter, but most importantly we can’t forget that Christmas and Thanksgiving is not the only time that people need food. Too many times do I see individuals excited that they fed the homeless through their job or some type of support system for their own personal motives. Most of the time these motives involve clocking volunteer hours and for the sake that doing this good deed is mandatory in some way.

I believe that feeding the homeless year round can be very helpful to those individuals in the city of Detroit. Recently I was blessed with the opportunity to feed 50 individuals around the city. These individuals were not apart of a program or shelter but were just as hungry as the next person in the same temporary situation. I was able to do this with a great, but small team, a handy Sam’s Club card, and no major organization backing me. My reasoning for doing this was not for recognition but to show the possibilities and things we could accomplish if we come together as a community. I feel that the individuals not in a program and on the streets are often forgotten about. We, as a community, need to do better at helping these individuals. Feeding the homeless is something that I have done in the pass but I would love to take it to a larger scale. I will do this with the participation of hopefully my fellow fellows and individuals who are in the community. People are hungry everyday and need to be addressed and shown that they are cared about. I will be organizing another feed the homeless movement and I hope that if you are reading this you join me.
